MNEK: From a Lewisham Bedroom to the Charts

MNEK — born Uzoechi Osisioma Emenike — is a British singer, songwriter, and producer with a Grammy nomination and an ASCAP Vanguard Award to his name. The hits matter. So does the way he has carried his identity through every one of them: openly, and on his own terms.

It started in a bedroom in Lewisham, London. He was blogging about his own music at 9 and had a publishing deal by 14. The stage name is a play on how his surname sounds — Emenike, compressed to MNEK.

The public caught up in January 2014, when his feature on Gorgon City's "Ready for Your Love" hit number four on the UK Singles Chart. His debut EP, "Small Talk," followed in March 2015 — his own vocals, his own songs, his own production, all on one record. Then came "Never Forget You" with Zara Larsson, which topped charts and went platinum in several countries.

MNEK came out at 19. Later he set up a songwriting camp for LGBTQ+ artists with Pride in Music — a working room where queer writers don't have to translate themselves before they can make a record. The music industry still rations that kind of space. He built some.

The sound moves through pop, dance-pop, house, and UK garage without settling anywhere for long, and it has found listeners well past the UK. His collaborator list includes Madonna, Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, and many others — which tells you how much of the last decade of pop has passed through his hands.

The plainest thing about MNEK is also the rarest: he never hid. Plenty of artists shape themselves to fit the industry's mold. He didn't, and the work is better for it — a standing case for visibility in a business that has seldom offered much of it to Black queer artists.

And he isn't finished. He keeps releasing, keeps producing, keeps writing for other people's records. Younger queer artists now come up watching someone who made the charts without a closet. That changes what they believe is possible for themselves.
